Republic of Ireland junior international captain James Walsh insists his St Michael’s side have as tough a quarter-final as they come as reward for knocking competition favourites Carrick United out of the FAI Junior Cup at the weekend.

Walsh’s junior and amateur international team-mate and centre half partner for club and country, Paul Breen, popped up late in Waterford to fire the Tipperary giants beyond the 2008 cup winners and into a last eight clash with Limerick’s Pike Rovers.

In a dramatic clash that featured numerous international stars, capped striker Thomas Fitzgerald missed a first-half penalty for Carrick, while Paul Toban (Michaels) and Michael Coady (Carrick), who are also international players, were sent off either side of half time.

Despite having 56 international caps for his country and being within touching distance of the appearance record, veteran defender Walsh has never tasted success in the junior cup.

He has tasted final defeat against Portmarnock and Fairview Rangers in 2000 and 2002 respectively but insists he is not even thinking about re-writing those wrongs just yet with Pike on their way to Cooke Park.

“Pike are champions of Limerick and did really well in the Munster Junior Cup last year so it is a massive game.

“Hopefully we can come through but it is going to be a tough ask because Pike have four players who are joining up with the international team this week themselves.

“We do take heart from the win over Carrick but it is still only the quarter-finals and if we lose next Sunday than it will mean nothing.

“At this stage of the competition games are separated by a single goal and I have no doubt next Sunday will be no different when Pike come to Tipperary confident they can win.

“Everybody is expecting Pike to go on and win the competition even though they have never done it before so we have it all to do.”

The top marksman in the Limerick District League, Patrick Mullens, was on target for Pike as they cruised past Springfield 3-1 at home.

Elsewhere, Michaels’ local rivals Clonmel Town came from two goals down in the second-half of their clash with Killarney Athletic to win 4-2 in extra time and book a quarter-final clash with Combined Counties outfit Willow Park.

Barry Ryan struck twice, while Ian Barnes and Ray Condon got the other goals as manager Michael Quinlivan looks to repeat his 1994 cup success with the club in his first season back in charge.

Willow Park are coming off the back of Sunday’s impressive 2-0 win at former Munster Junior Cup champions Leeside FC however and following fellow Athlone side St Peter’s run to the final last year, they can’t be underestimated.

Darren Sullivan struck the only goal of the game as record Fairview Rangers continued their own march towards claiming yet another junior cup crown with a 1-0 win over Crumlin United and with Brian Buckley leading majestically from the back they have every chance this year.

An Alsie Ray double and goals from younger brother Dan Ray and Joe O’Sullivan gave Athletic Union League side Shangan Athletic a second-consecutive 4-1 away win; this time at Dublin rivals Glebe North.

The Ballymun side now travel to Limerick to take on Regional after they knocked out county rivals Ballynanty in their derby clash on Sunday, while the Treaty county’s fourth team Kilmallock will travel to Fairview due to their success against Castleisland.
