Manchester United v AC Milan (3-2) Champions League Second Round, Second Leg Wednesday March 10th. (Live on RTE2) Old Trafford. Kick off 19.45. | read this item Despite a very much under-par league performance last Saturday against Roma in the battle for second place, AC Milan could not have done much more since their defeat by Manchester United three weeks ago.
They went to Bari and Fiorentina and won 2-0 and 2-1. Then they entertained Atalanta and beat them 3-1. All in a day’s work.
However, their lacklustre stalemate against Roma in front of a full house at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome may just show us that Milan are very capable of sweeping aside inferior opposition. But when push comes to shove, the Milan players seem to fall flat on their arses, no matter how well they played against United at the San Siro in the first half. However, despite no goals at Roma, Milan did create a couple of very good chances and with their slightly odd team selection, perhaps manager Leonardo had one eye on Wednesday night’s clash with United, where Milan must score twice to have any chance of proceeding in the competition.
A huge bonus for Milan is the inclusion in their travelling squad of Pato, who didn’t play against Roma on Saturday due to a hamstring strain suffered the week before. He has been a huge asset to Milan this season, knocking in a total of 14 goals.
One man who is ‘excited’ and ‘not scared’ of playing on Wednesday night at Old Trafford is David Beckham, who hasn’t played there since his departure from Manchester United in 2003.
“If I play on Wednesday,” he said to Milan’s telelvision channel, “I won’t be frightened but I will be excited because I played in that stadium for many years and I know what it means to be a Manchester United player. I know what it means for opponents to play there.”
United are being labeled as lucky for not being out of this tie by half-time in the first leg. As it stands now, they are hot favourites to proceed to the quarter final (worst price 1/33 to qualify).
But as mentioned earlier, Milan need to score twice, and that’s a minimum requirement. They’re more likely to have to match the three goals that United scored on their home patch. Milan are a very good team full of very intelligent footballers. While they may not qualify for the quarter finals, they should put up a decent fight of it at Old Trafford. Expect them to start brightly, like they did in Italy, and they may even nick a goal and be leading by half-time, but I fear 90 minutes may not be long enough for them to overturn this tie.
