Tuesday night’s coupon is a tough one. Are out-of-sorts Leeds really odds-on (away from home, I might add) to beat Tranmere? Madness. Portsmouth play Birmingham, and Sunderland host Bolton in the Premier League, but does anyone really care? Do their own fans care anymore? It’s debatable.
North of the English border, the coupon doesn’t get much better. Alloa are a shocking 11/10 to beat Dumbarton away from home, yet Alloa capitulated at 4/9 at home to bottom-of-table Clyde on Saturday. Lower down, in the Scottish Division 3, table-toppers Livingston are a scarcely-believable 1/2 to beat the team immediately below them in the table – East Stirling. Are the layers pulling our collective legs?

The Champions League rolls in to town again, with a few intriguing clashes. Stuttering Bayern Munich will look to consolidate their slender single-goal advantage over Fiorentina, but anyone that witnessed their dire weekend performances away to Cologne and at home to Juventus respectively will quite rightly swerve this game as a betting heat. Arsenal hope to overturn a 2-1 deficit at home to Porto; but much like betting on Barcelona without Messi or Real Madrid without Ronaldo, placing a wager on an Arsenal team shorn of the services of their sublime playmaker Cesc Fabregas could only be described as being the actions of a madman.

Instead, for a chance of making money on the night’s football, we must delve deep into the bowels of the English lower leagues. Indeed, so deep are we delving into these bowels that this league (the Southern Premier) could be decribed as being the lower intestine of English football – a putrid mess of rubbish footballers and laughable attendances. However, amidst all of the misery and depression of these lower leagues, there is a bet to be had.

Bottom side Rugby Town host second-from-top Halesowen Town, and a massive gulf of 44 points seperate these sides. Rugby’s form is nothing short of atrocious, having won just twice in a miserable season spanning 27 games. They possess the league’s most porous defence, conceding an unenviable 65 goals to date. Sitting eleven points adrift of second-last Clevedon Town, Rugby Town’s players must surely be the least motivated set of footballers worldwide.

Their opponents Halesowen have no such problems. Aside from being located further away than Rugby from the grey dullness that is Coventry, Halesowen are fighting it out for a place in the relative magnificence of the Ryman League. Halesowen have lost just three times from 31 games played so far this season, scoring a blistering 61 goals in the process. Halesowen will win this game, and a price of 2/5 would be only fair. However, those generous folk at PaddyPower, Coral and SkyBet see Halesowen as a 4/7 shot – and they should be punished.

Recommendation:

7pts Halesowen Town at 4/7 with www.paddypower.com, www.skybet.com and www.coral.co.uk

(Profit / Loss Running Total: + 13.65pts)
