Decision on Meath v Louth replay – Live updates

22:00 update
Press Statement release from the Louth County Board.
Leinster Football Championship Final; An Lú v An Mhí.
In relation to incidents which occurred during and after the LSFC Final on Sun 11th July 2010 the Executive Committee of the Louth County Board have met on a number of occasions to discuss the events of the day and correspondence pertaining to same..
Goalmouth incident at the end of match: The referee has indicated in his report that he blew the whistle for a penalty, but then changed his mind and awarded a goal instead, which is contrary to Playing Rules. We also fail to understand why the referee did not consult with both umpires in relation to the goal being awarded, which is also contrary to guidance given to referees in such contraversal circumstances. In the light of this and the clear admission in the referees report that he “made a terrible mistake”, the referees Report therefore is questionable.
Rule 6.41 Award //facts of game: The award of the game rests with the committee / council in charge acting on the referees report.
We would contend that that the committee / council in charge erred in leaving the matter to Meath County Board to offer a replay, without seeking clarification from the referee in relation to his match report and his statement “he made a terrible mistake”.
Despite the fact that there are several avenues open to us to question the result we believe we have a responsibility to our members & supporters alike to display leadership on this issue and to move forward to the qualifiers. At no stage (contrary to media reports) did we have a legal representative present at any of our deliberations and we would also like to state that at no stage did we consider legal proceedings on the matter..
The sense of injustice which is being felt in Louth GAA is enormous. However, the executive committee of The Louth County Board, the Senior Team Management and players have decided to take no further action regarding the outcome of the Leinster Football Championship Final.
On behalf of Louth GAA we would take this opportunity to congratulate our players and team management on a magnificent performance on Sunday, and wish them every success in the remainder of the championship. We would also take this opportunity to thank our loyal supporters who turned out in their thousands to cheer our team on, and we would encourage them to continue with their loyal support in the remainder of the Championship.
We have already condemned the disgraceful scenes which occurred post match and we would reiterate that there is no place for those individuals within our organisation.
We wish the Meath Players and management every success in their campaign.
Louth have had over the years a long and proud history of promoting the best interests of the GAA and will continue to strive to do so on and off the field of play.
Finally in light of the tragic events which occurred in Donegal over the weekend we realise that we must put our situation in context and we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of those deceased.
18:30pm update
Its all over Louth have decided to not look in the matter any further.
Press release to follow
09:20 update
Louth goalscorer JP Rooney has come out and said he is happy there is not going to be a replay. He told the Irish times “What would we have gained from a replay? It was a lose-lose situation for Louth. If we went out and beat them, it would take away from the actual day that was in it last Sunday and if we lost, we would be in a worse situation. We’ll get the heads down now and you don’t want to be seen as babies, crying about it.
“But we can’t blame Meath, they’ve done nothing wrong. Croke Park should have had a say in this; the Leinster Council or whoever makes the decisions but they were passing the buck and putting the pressure on Meath. They should have made the call.”

Statement from Coiste na Mi
Coiste na Mi has today received a copy of the referee’s report on Sunday’s Leinster Final, Lu v An Mhi. The referee has indicated in his report that he blew the whistle for a penalty but changed his mind and awarded the goal by Joe Sheridan when he saw that the ball had crossed the line.
Coiste na Mi has also been advised today by Coisde Ceannais na gComortaisi Laighean that, in accordance with Riail 6.41 T.O. and acting on the Referee’s report of the above game…An Mhi are the winners.
Having considered all aspects of the game and subsequent suggestions, as well as the Referees report and the Comhairle Laighean communication, Coiste na Mi, wishes to confirm that, as far as it is concerned, this is the end of the matter.
Coiste na Mi wishes to express its disappointment at the manner in which we and the team have been placed in such an unenviable position over the past 2 days.

Speculation an official appeal against the result of Sunday’s game will be made.
10:15 update
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Meath players and management have voted not to give Louth a replay because of the treatment they received after the match and back in Meath on Sunday night.
So its left up to the Meath county board to convince them to give a replay but it looks dead in the water now for Louth

22:46 update
Louth County Executive Committee had a meeting and reviewed the post match incidents at the LSFC final, Louth v Meath.
On behalf of Louth GAA we wish to condem the unsavoury incidents after the match. We will provide full co-operation with the relevant authorities to deal with the offenders.

There will no more discussion tonight on the matter at the Meath County board meeting . So all the reporters are leaving. Once we hear anything tomorrow we will have it up on the site
21:52 update
It looks like there is going to be no decision tonight, the wisdom of the Meath county board was not to get a copy of the ref’s report.
So unless they get a copy in the next hour there will be no more discussion on the matter tonight.
21:35 Update
Meath GAA Chairman Barney Allen read the statement issued earlier
today by the GAA in Croke Park to the delegates from 40 plus clubs.
“The management committee no decision made on offering a replay – we want a bit of time in relation to other matters being discussed,” he
said.
“We received no email with a copy of the referees report (from Croke Park).”
There was a query to get a copy of the referees report by Pat O’Neill
from the St Colmcilles club, the club of Meath half-forward Graham
Reilly.
O’Neill added, “We can’t do anything if the referee doesn’t give us the report.”

….there should be no replay the ref gave every
decision Louth’s way ,Ireland didn’t get a replay with France even tho the ref said he made the wrong call result should stand.
…jus wondering Jacqui were we watching the same game…
…jacqui your name sounds french what would you know about fair play
…I think there should be a replay, Remember what happened to Clare in 1998 and there was a reply there and Clare had won the game, Its starting all over again in the football now, The ref should have been up with the play and listen to his umpires. And they should try and keep everyone off the pitch for safety reason’s, it was very dangerous what happened after the match, Young chrildren there too they could have got hurt too.
…Hi I’m a GAA man through and through and I believe in fair play and if you cant have fair play you cant have sport!!!! Think about it!!!
…Is that not the point of GAA its an Irish sport, something that belongs to ireland. should not be compared with football.
…I think we are all talkin about the wrong situation here! Yes the ref was wrong but the decision ya made as soon as the final whistly was made. What should really be talkin about is the reaction of the louth supporters! It was barbaric and not acceptable, and all anyone want to talk about it the result of a game!! We need a serious reality check! Those supporters need to be caught and brought to justice!
…I don’t know why this whole fiasco is being compared to Henry’s handball. For century’s the GAA have being asking and dictating not to be compared to soccer and not to let soccer influence the sport of GAA. Now when a hard decision has to be made, they use the same of old excuse of comparing other situations and saying, ah well, GAA is just an amature sport, let’s forget about it. I think GAA is a community and family based sport. Yes it is an amature sport and this is more or a reason why there should be a replay and more of a reason why the GAA should stand up, admit there faults and be fair, be different and show an example. I do think it is unfair on Meath to have to decide. It should be the GAA; stop hiding behind the rule book! incompetence
…In the olympics when you are caught cheating medals are taken away from you,and you are disgraced.Meath were caught cheating by the whole nation. So as cheats you should hand the Trophy to the deserved winners on the day Louth. You should not even be asked for a replay Dont hide behind the rule book or a Referee’s mistake’s As a neutral at the game on Sunday I dont condone what happened afterwards, violence does not solve anything but morals would (If people had more)
…i agree with you peter ..EDITED POST
…Ok so the fans invaded the pitch in the heat of the moment the ref got a few love taps nothing serious. If meath county board believe in fair play a replay should be givein. If they dont the rest of the country wont be wishing them well.
…Meath supporters will still be wondering why they are so dispised…..PS.Not just in Louth
…I believe that a replay should be given. It was a disgrace what happened at the game, the referee’s actions were unfair he should have consulted with the Umpires, having said that however he shouldnt have had to face such abuse and violence either by supporters (although I can understand where their anger stemmed from)but the behaviour was unacceptable. Its the louth players I feel sorry for they play this game with all their heart and trainned hard all year to get there.
“amateur” game as the GAA committee so easily put it, although they have no problem reaping the monetarial benefits! but amatuer as it is those louth players and all GAA players give us their time and effort in training hard for the game and bring such entertainment to all of Ireland, so the least those players deserve is a fair game, I think a replay should be called and I think it should not be Meath management and players decision but the GAA should stand up and take responsility and call it! Im neither a louth or Meath supporter by the way!
…No Replay, we don’t need one. We know we won and Meath might have the Trophy but we’re Leinster Champions and I hope they get booed out of every game they have left this year by the fans of every opposing team they play.
And I think its incredibly unfair that we’re being slated for the actions of a few fans who Louth have co operated with the police on bringing to justice. The one that hit the ref was arrested as he should be. But of course this is now being used for the Meath players to hide behind so they can keep their stolen title.
Sheridan should be well ashamed of himself and Meath should hand the trophy to the Champions and try again next year without the blatant cheating
…I would agree totally with Peter. Louth had the game won. Who in there right mind, would not consult the umpires. Ok, picture it. You see some kind of ‘Shamossal’ in the goal. You see, Meath player on ground with ball. Next thing it is in the goal. He celebrates. The louth Players are shocked, and indicating something happened like a throw ball. So, walk into the goals, get the 2 umpires together behind the nets. Get all players to stay on pitch. Discuss it with the 2 lads. Lads, what happen. Well, meath guy on ground and he threw it into the net. The other lad says, well, meath guy on ground and threw it into the net. Alright lads, do you agree, that the meath lad threw the ball into the net? Yes. Ok, do you agree that I (as ref) should disallow the goal and award a free out? Yes. Ok. Simple stuff this refereeing. Free out. Kick out, game over, Louth are Leinster champs for 1st time in 53 years! So, since, Meath got the cup for winning the game, they should get the cup taken off them, given to the Louth lads, no replay because that is going to be a whole load of hassle to fit in and get on with it! I believe, Louth will never get a better chance to win it as everyone now know how good they can be and will prepare accordingly! Winning title for smaller counties I feel, you need to be under the radar! Unfortunately they are wrong side of giving a team the surprise. Either way, a few supporters should not tarnish a nation, so GAA need to get their ducks aligned, sort them out, and get on with it.
…Im sick of this!! Im from Meath and whats happend, has happend! Meath didnt get a replay in 07 against Dublin when Grhame Geraty scored a goal! rember that or everyone have short memories?! Meath fucked around with the ball for 3 mins, they could have scored a point for the draw but they went for it, and if the goal was not to be given it was defo a peno call, 4 louth men and the goalie hanging out of Joe Sheridan!. No need to be calling Joe a cheat either, it was not his fault. There are 2 umpires at the goals for a reason. What them louth fans done was a disgrace and i hope the Gardai take serious action against them, espically the scumbag who threw the bottle out of the stand at the ref but struck the steward. Im sick of all the posts here calling us cheats! When did we cheat? Its not our fault the ref is as blind as a bat!!! if ye scored it would you complain?? I think not. Watch this link of a certain center foward gouging Seamus Kenny! Hope you see the Dirty side to this when ye are calling for “fair play” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42Y_WncSUxI
…after watching the match, the highlights and again on you-tube the throw ball, and square ball if croker don’t make an example of this i will be shocked. if they can use video evidence to increase player bans then they can sort this mess out! i don’t blame the player coz in the heat of the moment anyone would have done the same! sort it out!
…louth were the better team deserved to win. but there can be no replay, there would be war if anything happened. decisions go against teams all the time wether right or wrong, but you cant use history to defend actions of thugs and say ye deserve the cup the goal was giving wrongly just as a free against crawford was just as a free against big joe was for apparently picking the ball off the ground when it was at his chest. GET OVER IT!!!!!
Brian. They will. They’ll be brought to justice because they were in the wrong to do what they did and everyone in Louth will stand up and say that. But blaming us for that is unfair.
And Meath cheated cause your guy scored a rugby try in a GAA Leinster Final. Simple as. And the Ref was at fault for not consulting his umpires. That title will never be considered a legit win for Meath. Not ever.
…Cant believe the absolute STUPIDITY of some of the comments here. No the goal should not have been allowed. but it was down to the GAA to sort this mess out. Meath should not have been backed into a corner over this. The treatment of the ref and the Meath players, by both Louth supporters AND Players after the game on Sunday was an absolute disgrace (yes i was there an no im not from Meath).. … People talk about justice, If there is any justice then a county should be held accountable for its supporters.. So yes.. go ahead and offer the replay, But then should Louth not be kicked out of the championship?????. Can anybody say there would have been as much made of this if the incident had occurred the other way around??? Just because a county has not won a title in 50yrs does not give them the right to behave like Thugs. I was at the game on Sunday, and seen at least two kids been violently shoved out of the way as Louth supporters made their way onto the pitch to get to the ref… And to say that Meath were AFRAID to offer a replay in the fear of getting beaten is just beyond stupidity….
…i see ppl referring to ireland france game and i think it draws good comparison.. yes the referee in both cases made mistakes but the problem is the reputation of teams is what suffered not referee… i can undersatnd the gaa saying they could not award replay as it would have caused legal chaos but i think they genuinely thought that giving meath the chance to do the honourable thing would pay off and meath would offer replay.. unfortunatly meath are just like the french… i wonder how many meath ppl are fans on facebook of the give ireland a replay groups.. you are all hippocrites now!!
…i think dublin should have beaten meath. then there wouldn’t be this mess. but really louth fans and the team should remember that although they don’t have the cup, everybody in the country knows that louth are champions of leinster. (a dub living in louth)
…I’m a Louth fan and I’m definately not going to held responsible for how 6-7 fans behaved on Sunday! I would never have done that. Everyone is concentrating on the behaviour of a miniscule amount of people. There were thousands upon thousands of Louth fans there on Sunday and there was only trouble from people that do not represent me or the other thousands of true Louth fans. THis matter could easily have been resolved but now that chance is gone. Meath can revel in their stolen cup but they’ll get booed out of every match from here on in…… Violence was not the way to go but Meath should hang their heads in shame…..
…As a result of the Louth fans attack on the referee today. The CCCC has banned the following kERRY PLAYERS FOR 4 WEEKS, – Declan O Sullivan, Colm Cooper, Kieran Donaghy, Seamus Scanlon and Mike McCarthy. They are awaiting the referees report from todays munster hurling final before deciding on any further action against the Kerry team.
…It was so clear cut, just as Thierry Henrys Handball and Frank Lampards Goal, that Joe Sheridans Goal should not have been given. Why with all the technology that we have do we refuse to introduce it into sporting events, all the grief that the referee had to endure and the aftermath from the Game would not have occurred if we just used some good old common sense.
…as a ardent follower of gaa i think that the ref had agood game up until the goal was awarded to meath which shouldn;t of been i also think that what happened after the final whistle was blown was a disgrace there no place in gaa for so call thugs if you want to go back a bit tyrone where in the all ireland final in1995 when a ref miske cost tyrone there first all ireland the ref knows he made a mistake im not going to name him but he knows who he is if meath had the courage they should have a rematch but i dont think they have the sooner there beat in the all ireland series the better because it just what they deseve after the way louth were robbed the gaa should bring in video replays and link up for the ref were the matter is dealt with and play can resume without pause nows the time to think about this get it right money shouldn;t be an option here as for louth good luck in the all ireland series.
joe an ardent tyrone supporter
…oh god what a bunch of bitter people on here…
1)The replay decision should not have been left up to Meath in the first place.
2)Calling Joe Sheridan a cheater is such a ‘I know nothing at all about GAA’ remark to make. Lifting the ball directly off the ground is considered a fowl and a free should be awarded. If a player lifts the ball directly off the ground and the ref doesnt notice should he stop dead and confess to the ref…emm no..
3)Had the clock been wound down by Rooney’s(admittedly a great footballer who got a brilliant goal) antics(perhaps the non louth bandwagon jumpers may need to actually watch the match to know what I am talking about) and Louth won the match would Meath have been in a position to look for a replay as they were wrongly done out of the time to level the match. Infact I know Meath would not have done any such thing.
4)Rooney -the would have been hero in Louth has gotten over it so I suggest you all do the same.
Fairplay to JP Rooney…a replay is not possible. The more this drags on the more negative effect it will have on the louth team
They just need to put it behind them and focus on their next game in two weeks
