Ciara Mageean has set a new record in the 1500m in Athlone on Wednesday night, while Mark English has also showed us all in the athletics world how good he is winning the AIT International Grand Prix at Athlone IT
Mageean and English showed their prospect of potential medalists for the European equivalent next month in Glasgow. Thomas Barr was narrowly beaten by Dutch opponent Tony Can Diepen in the 800m. Mageeans time on Wednesday was 4.06.78 which cut off 4 seconds than that of the previous Irish record which was set in 2000 by Sinead Delahunty. Claucia Bobocea from Romania was second, while Anna Silvander from Sweden and incidentally training partner with Mageean was third with a time of 4.13.80.
In the 800m final it was English who was quick out of the blocks. He finished second in the race last year but there was to be no denying him here. English from Letterkenny ran a time 1.46. 94. He is scheduled to run at Abbotstown this weekend in the National senior indoor event. Thomas Barr was dissapointed after he came 2nd to his Dutch opponent. The Deise man posted a time of 47.05 seconds which was only 0.04 seconds behind his opponent. Richardo Dos Santos finished 3rd.
The night though goes to Mageean who set a second Irish record of the season. The 26 year old set a record last month in Boston in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. Her time for the mile was 4.28.38. This beat her own record which was set three years previous.
