Eight division world champion Manny Pacquaio is set for a September ring return against either Juan Manuel Marquez or Timothy Bradley.
It is understood that Pacquaio’s promoter Bob Arum is in talks with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez over a possible fifth fight between the pair, after Marquez sensationally knocked Pacquaio out in their fourth fight in December. Pacquaio is keen to avenge the defeat however Marquez is not willing to fight Pacquaio again.
If Arum cannot negotiate a fight with Marquez, which would generate massive revenue, he will turn his attention toward Timothy Bradley, another man who has recently beaten the former pound for pound star. Bradley claimed Pacquaio’s WBO Welterweight crown in a controversial split decision in 2012 with most ringsiders and onlookers making Pacquaio the easy winner.
Both fights would create mass media attention, but it all depends on how much the Filipino has left in him. That brutal knockout to Marquez was his first real knockout by a top level opponent. I doubt his abilities to make a comeback and genuinely challenge for world honours again.
He was once a great fighter, beating world champions and bigger men, but with some poor performances in his last four fights and now at the age of 34, you would really have to wonder what is left in the tank.
It might be smarter if Pacquaio and his team were to choose a slightly average opponent for him to face. Maybe look at a fighter who is on the brink of World level, a man that Pacquaio could get some rounds with but never be in risk of losing the fight, just so he could find a winning formula again.
But the warrior that Pacquiao is, he won’t allow himself to face anyone who is not a worthy contender, I just hope for his health that he is 100% returning to the ring.
