On your daily sports recap today…
The Republic of Ireland slumped to a 1-0 defeat againstĀ Finland at a deserted Aviva Stadium. Jason Molumby was handed a debut for Stephen Kenny’s experimental looking lineup. Callum Robinson had the best chance for the Boys in Green. It was an abject display that raises real concerns for the new boss.
In other Nations League action Wales scored a stoppage-time winner against Bulgaria. Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati became Spain’s youngest goalscorer. He broke a 95-year-old record when netting in the 4-0 win over Ukraine. Switzerland and Germany played out a high quality 1-1 draw in Basel.
Rory McIlroy slipped further behind the field at the Tour Championship as he carded a disappointing level-par round of 70 on day three in Atlanta. Dustin Johnson leads by a massive by 10 shots with the American way out in front on 19 under par.
Kiladangan joined Loughmore Castleiney in the Tipperary SHC decider. The two hotly-anticipated semi-finals turned out to be damp squibs. Both victors were rarely troubled in what was in truth, extremely poor fare. Breaffy and Knockmore will contest the Mayo SFC Final, while Cuala and Ballyboden St Enda’s will square off in the Dublin SHC Final.
PERSIAN KING REIGNS IN FRANCE
Persian King saw off the mostly Irish raiding party to provide trainer Andre Fabre with victory in the Prix du Moulin at Paris Longchamp. Charlie Appleby’s Pinatubo was the 5-4 favorite to land the spoils. Pinatubo was a shade unlucky but left his charge a little too late. Circus Maximus stayed on to finish third, with 2,000 Guineas hero Siskin fourth.
Saracens’ Owen Farrell will appear before an online disciplinary panel on Tuesday evening. The verdict will be of particular interest to Leinster their Champions Cup quarter-final opponents. It is expected that the England international will be ruled out of the crunch fixture.
