Ireland’s Lara Gillespie has won Ireland’s first medal at the UCI Junior Track World Championships by claiming bronze in the Individual Pursuit in Frankfurt, Germany.
The Wicklow teenager set a new Irish Junior National Record of 2:20:438 during qualification, averaging 51.268kpm for the 2,000m time trial.
The race for bronze saw Gillespie compete against Russia’s Marii Milaeva. The Irish teenager trailed by almost half a second at the halfway point but measured her effort brilliantly to overcome the Russian and claim a bronze medal.

“I’m so happy, I can’t believe it. The last few laps were pretty hard, they were pretty brutal but I worked so hard for this all year so I’m really happy” admitted Gillespie, who earlier this season won silver medals in the individual pursuit, scratch race, and points race at the Junior European Championships.
