Corofin have retained their title for the fourth successive year after they edge out Padraig Pearses by 1-10 to 0-07 at Tuam on Sunday.
The current All-Ireland champions were made work for their win but the experience of winning big games shone through. Nevertheless, Padraig Pearses tried to make it as difficult as possible for the hosts. The opening exchanges were physical, both sides always played safe football at times in the opening half. However, the second half was a whole different ball game.
The Roscommon champions were three points down at one stage in the second half. They narrowed the gap to just the minimum on the resumption when Paul Carrey registered two frees. Pat Flanagan’s charges then had a goal chance with Conor Daly finding brother Conor. However, Conor’s effort went agonisly wide. Liam Silke then stepped up on 42 minutes to rifle a shot past Paul Whelan. Corofin now edge three ahead of Pearses. The 7 in a row Galway champions in control.
However, It could have went from bad to worse for Padraig Pearses then. In addition, from the resulting kickout, Daragh Silke won the ball in midfield, he turned provider for Michael Farragher. His goal bound effort however hit the crossbar and flew over the bar. Pearses to their credit never gave in. The game was getting a bit feisty now and referee Eamonn O’Grady was brandishing cards. Niall and Shane Daly were both given black cards. Niall Daly was then dismissed for the Roscommon champions on a second yellow card. With that Pearses chance was all but ended. Colin Brady was introduced as a substitute and he raised a white flag as did Jason Leonard. Carey pointed for Pearses but it was far little to late as Corofin won their fourth successive Connacht title. Additionally, They now look forward to an Ireland semi-final.
