Mark English makes European 800m final following appeal

A successful appeal saw Ireland’s Mark English awarded a place in Sunday’s final of the men’s 800m at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow having been impeded in Saturday’s semi-final.

The UCD athlete was impeded on the penultimate lap by Briton Guy Learmonth which saw him coming to a standstill before getting going again and eventually finishing 5th in 1:50.70. Learmonth was disqualified under rule 163.2 as a result.

Meanwhile the three Irish sprinters in action all ended their interest in the Glasgow Championships.

Tallaght’s Joseph Ojewumi finished 6th in heat 1 of the men’s 60m in 6.97 seconds.

World U20 relay silver medallists Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn) and Molly Scott (SLOT) finished in 7th and 6th positions respectively in heats 5 and 6 of the women’s 60m.

Roy was 7th in 7.62 seconds from lane 6, while Scott narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals with her 6th placing in 7.43 seconds as a time of 7.40 seconds would have seen her through as a fastest qualifier.

Emerald’s Ciara Neville had to withdraw from the women’s 60m heats due to illness.
