The Sigerson Cup has been moved forward and is set to finish up in January. The news comes as the higher education committee try to avoid fixture clashes.
According to RTE Sport the college tournament will begin on the 11th and 12th of January. The final will be the 29th of January. The Allianz Football League begins on the 26th of January . This will probably mean that players would be available for their county teams.
The Chairman of the Higher Education Committee said “We have been under pressure because the competition has overlapped with the league but next year it’s straight knock-out so a lot of the teams will be out before the league starts” he told the Irish Independent
He continued “It is a change but we’d hope that this eases some of the pressure on our third-level players who have choices to make at a busy time.” Although these college tournaments will obviously clash with the pre season tournaments like the Dr McKenna Cup and O’Byrne Cup managers will probably be happy enough with that. Their main target will be to blood players in the league campaign.
The All-Ireland U20 football and hurling championship will now be played in the months of February and March. These tournaments were held in the months of June and August this season. Therefore, these games could potentially clash with the National Hurling and Football Leagues. Whether the Sigerson finishing up in January or not is a good idea or not only time will obviously tell.
