Wexford SHC: St Martin’s crowned champions with 1-15 to 1-13 win over St Anne’s

St Martin’s 1-15 St Anne’s 1-13

St Martin’s were crowned Wexford senior hurling champions for the 4th time over near neighbours St Anne’s at Wexford Park on Sunday.

The first half to be fair was rather mixed, some good bits of hurling and then some not so good. A crowd of nearly 6,000 people seen St Martin’s take a 0-06 to 0-03 lead over the Anne’s after 15 minutes. Wexford senior hurler Jack O’Connor knocking over two sublime points.Conor and Joe Coleman also registered white flags to put the Piercestown outfit ahead. St Anne’s probably should have scored two goals only for ex-county dual star Redmond Barry to be denied by two good saves from Luke White.

Diarmuid O’Keeffe who is likely to pick up an all-star later next month scored 0-06 for St Annes, with 0-05 coming from play. There was little to separate as we approached injury time. However, St Martin’s struck a killer blow before the break. Jake Firman popping up with a goal to give his side a 1-10 to 0-07 lead at the break.

St Anne’s made a superb start to the second with Aidan Rochford coming to the fore. The gap was back to three points, 1-12 to 0-12, O’Keeffe once again doing the damage from placed balls. With 50 minutes on the clock St Anne’s were given a penalty by referee Dan Crosby. Darragh Furlong was fouled, Mark Furlong stepped up to take the penalty but his effort rebounded off the post. Darren Codd put St Martin’s four points clear on 56 minutes. St Anne’s weren’t going down without a fight and Aidan Rochford found space to leave a point between the sides coming into injury time. St Martin’s showed their experience although they were without Rory O’Connor, as players like Joe O’Connor, Willie Devereaux and Daithi Waters held firm in defence. Joe Coleman knocked over a free to conclude proceedings.
