Donegal footballer killed in Australia

24-year old Tomas Maguire, a well known Gaelic footballer from Ardara in County Donegal, has been killed in a tragic car accident in Perth, Australia on Monday.

It is the second tragedy his family have suffered in just sixteen months after his cousin Martina lost her battle with cancer at only 16 years old last year.

Tomas captained Ardara in their 2005 minor championship final defeat to Killybegs and was believed to be in Donegal manager Jim McGuinness’ plans before he decided to head Down Under with a friend a few months ago.

A devastated Ardara GAA Chairman Stephen McCahill paid him a glowing tribute, saying: “It’s a terrible blow to Ardara. Tomas was a delightful young man and very popular. Everybody liked him – he was just a loveable boy. He was a brilliant footballer and regarded as one of the best.”

“The people of the town and surrounding areas are just devastated by the news,” he added.
Tomas is survived by his parents Eunan and Eileen, brother Eunan and sisters Tara and Claire.
