The Carrickmacross Lions Club are holding their second Twin(s) + Parade on Sat June 4th as part of the Carrickmacross Festival Weekend. Its pronounced twins plus because this year after requests from parents of triplets we have decided to include triplets, quads and all other multiples in the Parade.
Last year saw 231 sets of twins take part, which was an Irish record for the largest gathering of twins in the same place at the same time. This year organisers are hoping for bigger and better and are aiming to surpass this figure and set a new record.
The sponsor this year is a company called Healthy Hearts, Healthy Lives who arrange mobile Cardiac Screening Clinics for sporting clubs around Ireland and Northern Ireland. It was set up by Tony and John McEntee, themselves twins and former Armagh footballers and current All-Ireland club champions with Crossmaglen Rangers. Their primary focus is on screening 14-35 year olds engaged in sporting activities but their service is available to anyone who wants to be screened. Check out www.healthyheartshealthylives.com .
All proceeds of the parade goes to providing a bus to take Alzheimer’s patients to a day care facility in North Monaghan once a week. However, this year it is also planned to highlight the subject of Sudden Cardiac Death in young sportspeople like Cormac McAnallen, Phil O’Donnell, Marc Vivien Foe and Oisin McGuinness from Newry.
Oisin died tragically in March 2009 whilst playing football in Newry from Sudden Cardiac Death. His parents John and Joan raised money after his death to promote Cardiac Screening and provide AEDs to sporting clubs.
So this year the objective of the Parade is twofold.
– to get more twins and multiples for the parade and raise a few euro for charity and secondly
– to highlight the availability and importance of Cardiac Screening in young sports people.
In order to increase the number of participants this year, organisers are appealing to all sporting clubs eg soccer, rughy gaa, tennis, swimming etc throughout the island to sponsor a set of twins and send them to the parade. Registration is now open on www.carrickmacross.ie ( just click on the Twins in a Basket Icon) and costs only €10.
