Michael Shields in surprise return

St. Finbarr’s 0-13 Newcestown0-11

Michael Shields was a surprise inclusion in the St. Finbarr’s team against Newcestown at Páirc Liam Mac Cárthaigh, Ballygarvan, on Sunday.

The Cork senior received a month’s suspension along with Dublin’s Philip McMahon, for an incident in the tunnel at half-time in the National League Final last month. McMahon appealed the decision and was cleared to play in the Dublin championship. As a direct result of this precedent, Shields was also cleared for yesterday’s Cork game.

“It was a kind of a distraction,” Barrs’ manager, Bill O’Connell told the Irish Examiner. “Obviously having his presence on the field was a relief because he is a great player. The other guy who got two really good scores was Ronan Curran who hasn’t played football for two or three years. He was immense when we needed him.”
