Champions DCU knocked out of Sigerson Cup

Reigning Sigerson Cup champions DCU crashed out of this years campaign at the quarter-finals this afternoon, following a 1-12 to 0-14 loss to UCC.

A 47th minute JB Spillane goal propelled UCC to a 1-11 to 0-10 lead, one they wouldn’t relinquish in the closing stages despite a late DCU charge.

DCU led by 0-5 to 0-3 early on thanks to the industrious work of Michael Murphy, Michael Lyng and Cathal Cregg.

However UCC stole a 0-7 to 0-6 interval lead with Cork’s Barry O’Driscoll and Kerry duo Daithi Casey and Stephen O’Brien claiming vital points.

Scores from James McCarthy and Murphy edged DCU ahead on the restart, but UCC took command entering the final quarter thanks to Spillane’s goal and held out, with a Paddy Andrews goal shot coming back off the post late on.

UCC will face UCD in the second semi-final tomorrow, after the host college claimed a firm 0-18 to 2-3 win over NUI Galway.

The sides were tied at 1-2 to 0-5 in the 19th minute following a Neil Douglas goal for NUI Galway, but UCD claimed six unanswered points before the break to take a 0-11 to 1-2 interval lead.

John Heslin and John O’Loughlin were among the UCD scorers as they moved 13 points clear on the restart.

NUI Galway staged a late rally with a Mark McHugh point along with a Greg Higgins goal but it was too little too late for John Maughan’s side.

Meanwhile UUJ and NUI Maynooth will face off in the first semi-final after wins over IT Carlow and UL respectively.

Goals from Conor McManus and Jason McAnulla helped UUJ claim a 2-19 to 1-8 win.

UUJ led by 1-10 to 1-5 at half-time with Craig Rogers netting a seventh minute penalty for IT Carlow.

Meanwhile five players were on target for NUI Maynooth in their 0-9 to 1-2 win over UL.

Anthony Maher claimed the UL goal as his side led by 1-1 to 0-3 at half-time.

However, Declan O’Keefe’s charges were held to just one second half point as the likes of Laois’s Paul Cahillane helped NUI Maynooth claim a last four berth.
