Clare v Wexford, Sunday, 2pm, Ennis
Davy Fitzgerald will return to his homeland on Sunday afternoon when he brings his Wexford side to face Clare at Cusack Park in Ennis at 2pm on Sunday. A win here for Wexford would ensure a quarter final place for sure, while a win for Clare would also bring them up the table.
Clare have played three games so far in the league campaign. They lost out to Tipperary on the opening weekend by 2-16 to 1-11, followed that up with a very good win over Kilkenny, before losing to Cork last weekend in a game in which Tony Kelly was absolutely superb. Wexford have also played three games, winning 2 of these. The only blip on the card was an opening weekend defeat to All-Ireland Champions Limerick. They beat Cork and Tipperary which would have really impressed Davy Fitzgerald.
This game will be difficult for Wexford but their is no reason why they can’t win it in my opinion. Clare showed last weekend against Cork that they have forwards that can do damage, Tony Kelly, Ian Galvin and John Conlon for instance all put in sterling performances. In addition that trio joint managers Donal McInerney and Gerry O’Connor will look to Colm Galvin, Diarmuid Ryan. Jack Browne and David McInerney to put in big performances.
Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald will look to players that performed very well against Tipperary, Diarmuid O’Keeffe impressed at midfield, while Darren Byrne at full back did very well in a big test against Seamus Callanan. Ian Byrne also made an appearance for Wexford and with him Seamus Casey and Cathal Dunbar in attack they could have the Clare defence done for pace.
Clare (SH v Wexford): Donal Tuohy; Rory Hayes, David McInerney, Jack Browne; Patrick O’Connor (captain), Conor Cleary, David Fitzgerald; Shane Golden, Colm Galvin; Peter Duggan, Tony Kelly, Diarmuid Ryan; Ian Galvin, John Conlon, Podge Collins.
Clare are 1/2 favourites here with Wexford priced as 2/1 and the draw is 9/1. I fancy Clare to win by 2 or 3 points with Tony Kelly to put on a master show yet again.
