A football mentor has been given a three-month suspended jail sentence for punching a teenage player in the face at pitchside.
Conor Connelly, who is a former intercounty footballer, pleaded guilty to assaulting the 17-year-old player.
The attack was unprovoked and happened during the Offaly senior county football league final between Edenderry and Ballycumber.
The youth played for Edenderry and was trying to keep the ball in play when he brushed by Connelly. The mentor hit the player in the face and damaged his front teeth, which resulted in dental work that is still ongoing.
Connelly has already paid €11,000 towards the teenager’s medical costs and he visited the family to deliver an unreserved apology.
