Cork will play Kilkenny in a fundraising hurling match for Kieran O’Connor on the 27th March Cork GAA have announced. The whole of Ireland have got behind Kieran over the last few weeks in terms of fundraising, indeed a walk called the Walk for Kieran in Aghada has proven largely successful and the fundraising campaign which started less than two weeks ago has raised over 300,000 euro.
Tracey Kennedy Chairperson of the Cork County Board announcing details of the game said that all proceeds from the game will go towards the fundraising efforts, also she extended her good wishes to Kieran and support of the Cork County to the 2010 All Ireland and his family as he battles with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Speaking to GAA.ie Kennedy said, “Kieran was a tower of strength on the field for many years, and I know he is dealing with his illness with the same fortitude and determination,” said Kennedy. “It can’t be an easy time for his family, but Kieran is lucky to have the love and support of Sinéad, the children and his extended family too. “Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time. Monday’s walk really highlighted the community aspect of the GAA, and it has been wonderful to witness the extent of the support shown for Kieran from far and wide over the past two weeks. We are hoping for a bumper crowd on March 27th to continue that support.”
The game itself between Cork and Kilkenny will take place in Pairc Ui Rinn on Wednesday the 27th of March at 7.30pm. Tickets are 10 euro for adults and 5 euro concessions for students and OAP’s. Tickets will also be available on the night of the game, as well as online and Centra and Super Value stores. In addition to the game bucket collections will take place at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on May 12th when Cork host Tipperary in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship.
