GAA President John Horan has launched the 17th series of the Laochra Gael programme that will be televised on TG4 in the spring. Just like it done last year it will follow numerous players bringing their stories to the screens. It will feature six Laochra from across all codes. Let’s take a look at the six shows.
Jackie Tyrrell – The Journey – Airs 20th of February @9.30pm – Jackie will go down in history as one of the best players to play the game. The programme will give an insight into Jackie’s life on and off the field and will look at how his self doubt affected him and how he met a man that made him deal with it through sport . It follows him from his highs to his lows and is a show not to be missed.
Seamus Darby – The Man Who Got the Goal – Airs 27th of February @9.30pm – Many will surely recognise this man’s name, he is famous for that goal against Kerry in the All-Ireland Final. The programme will look at his story up to the moment he scored that goal, it will look at detail climax of the 1982 final that put an end to the 5 in a row for Kerry .
Rena Buckley – The Best Person in the World – What a superb player Rena was in both codes for the Rebeletes. She broke all kind of records that may never be broken again. Rena won 18 All-Ireland medals in total, between camogie and Gaelic football, while also amassing 10 all star awards. She captained Cork to All-Ireland success and became the first person to do just this. She speaks about women’s sport and how it is changing the landscape of Ireland.
Kieran Duff – Don’t Judge Me – Airs 13th of March @9.30pm – Duff played for Dublin in 1980’s. He was subject to a lot of controversy in his career. He depicted a hard man image when playing the game. He was sent off in the 1983 final .This episode will look at this iconic GAA figure in much more detail.
Andrew O’Shaughnessy – Shaughs’ – Airs 20th of March @9.30pm – This episode will follow former Limerick star Andrew O’Shaughnessy. The Limerick man’s career was cut short due to Multiple Sclerosis. He stepped back from the game at the age of just 24. The episode looks back at his career, success under Richie Bennis and Justin McCarthy as well how Shaughs’ has rebuilt his live following the diagnosis.
Colm Cooper – Gooch – Airs on 27th of March @9.30pm – This is the final in the series. If goes behind to look at Colm Cooper winner of 5 All-Ireland medals and 8 all star awards. It looks at his family life and personal life as in how he coped with the passing of his dad during his playing games,as well as looking back on the testimonial controversy.
