Mayo 1-13 Cavan 0-11
Mayo sit joint top of the Division 1 table after a five point win over Cavan at MacHale Park on Saturday night. James Horan’s men now sit on top with Kerry and it’s the first time on 13 years they have won all three opening games in league football according to RTE Sport.
It was Cavan who made a superb start though in this encounter they led by 0-04 to 0-01 after 10 minutes. Dara McVeety kicked a nice score before Jack Brady followed that up with two frees, goalkeeper Raymond Galligan also pointed for the Breffni men. Mayo gradually kept in touch though with Andy Moran kixkibk over two points in the opening period. The sides were level after 17 minutes when Jason Doherty kicked a nice score after he forced the Cavan players into a mistake and he turned over the ball to split the posts.
Mayo could have a goal on 22 minutes but it would have been very lucky. Stephen Coen hit the effort and it needed the finger tips of Galligan to knock it out for a 45. Aidan O’Shea hit a point from a mark and then a free from Doherty pushed Mayo two ahead before Evan Regan rattler the back of the net.
The second half Mayo pushed on with Lee Keegan, man of the match Ger Cafferkey , second half substitutes Brian Reape and Donal Vaughan outstanding. Cavan did try with all their might even with the good performances of Conor Redhill at wing back. Mayo proved to strong in the end and Cavan now are rooted to the bottom of Division 1.
