GAA Result: Tipperary upset Donegal in Thurles

Tipperary proved to strong for Donegal in an entertaining game in Thurles on Sunday. It was the three goals which Donegal that proved costly as they lost their first game of the league campaign.

Steven O’Brien, Liam McGrath and Liam Casey all grabbed the three pointers for Liam Kearns’ men as the Premier got their first win in Division 2 in 2019.  Donegal had the wins in opening half and they picked up a 0-10 to 1-04 lead at the break. Donegal could have been leading by a bit more though as they had a penalty saved by Tipperary goalkeeper Michael O’Reilly, Jamie Brennan was the spot kick taker for Donegal men who were again without Michael Murphy and Paddy McBrearty as well the Gaoith Dobhair contingent who are in action next weekend.

Tipperary failed to score until the 54 minute then so they went 19 minutes without scoring. It was a fortuitous goal from Liam McGrath as his free from long range went all the way to back of the net. Tipperary were now only trailing by a point before Gallen and Liam Boland traded scores. Thompson and Brian Fox then traded scores. Tipperary struck the next score and it was crucial one, Liam Casey popped up with a goal drilling low past Shaun Patton in the Donegal goal having been assisted by Liam McGrath.  Casey then kicked a free, before match winning scores from Sweeney and O’Brien sealed a deserved win for the Premier men.
