Galway defeated Limerick on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-4 in the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 Semi-Final as Limerick lost out at this stage for the fifth consecutive year.
Declan Nash’s Limerick, unbeaten in the group phase, never reached their potential in what was a disappointing performance against a strong Galway side.
Niamh Hanniffy, who played for the University of Limerick in their successful Ashbourne Cup campaign, continued her goal-scoring run go give Galway a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after only four minutes.
Four pointed frees by Carrie Dolan, a pair from Noreen Coen, with Ailish O’Reilly and Niamh Kilkenny also on the mark, ensured the eventual winners had a 1-8 to 0-1 at the break, with Niamh Mulcahy the only player to score for the Shannonsiders in the opening period.
Rebecca Delee was denied a goal that Limerick desperately required early in the second half by Galway goalkeeper Sarah Healy, before Mulcahy doubled Limerick’s tally from another placed ball.
Ailish O’Reilly scored Galway’s second goal mid-way through the second half before the scoring rate dropped as Cathal Murray cleared his bench.
Limerick, however, were still unable to score from play as Mulcahy provided them with their four points, while Galway had six individual scorers, with O’Reilly ending the game with a total of one goal and four points.
Galway will now attempt to prevent Ann Downey’s Kilkenny side from becoming only the third team to complete a four-in-a-row when the sides meet in the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 Final.
