Kerry 0-17 Monaghan 0-13
Kerry made it 5 wins from 5 in Division 1 of the league with a 4 point win over Monaghan at a very snowy Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney on Sunday afternoon. The loss for Monaghan means the threat of relegation still looms large and they will have 2 games to maintain their top flight status in the coming weeks.
It was a late surge from Peter Keane’s men that put the game to bed. They took control in the final 10 minutes and they impressed me very much. Their speed, tackling and match control were all top class. It will be a tough defeat to Monaghan who probably felt it was going to be there day considering they led up until the 65 minute. However, it was scores from O’Brien, Moynihan, Tom O’Sullivan and two Sean O’Shea points that claimed the spoils for Kerry.
The half time score was Monaghan 0-09 Kerry 0-07. Conor McManus at his best for the Farney men kicking 0-06, four of which came from frees, one from a mark and one from a free. There three other scores came courtesy of Stephen O’Hanlon, Gavin Doogan and Conor McCarthy. Kerry’s seven scores came from four players. Sean O’Shea kicked three points, two from frees and one from play, Tommy Walsh scored from play and from a mark, while Stephen O’Brien and O’Sullivan also raised white flags.
Sean O’Shea and Walsh kicked points on the resumption. The Kerrins O Rahilly club man kicked three offensive marks in total. It was tit for tat then until Kerry took control and had the lead on 65 minutes. Malachy O’Rourke’s side had midfielder Darren Hughes sent off on the 67 minute which wouldn’t have helped them coming down the home straight. This meant Kerry could find the gaps and push and get the scores to see out the game through O’Brien, O’Sullivan and O’Shea. Its the fourth loss in a row now for Monaghan, as it stands they will be relegated with Ulster neighbours Cavan. On the other side Kerry are well on the way to a league final now barring odd results against Mayo and Roscommon in their final games. Things are certainly looking up for the Kingdom !
