Less than 24hrs after reports broke that Davy Fitzgerald was set to extend his Wexford contract there has been a massive gamble on him to get the Galway job.
Last month Micheal O’Donoghue confirmed he would not be continuing as Galway manager and bookmakers opened up odds on the next Galway hurling manager.
O’Donoghue had led Galway to an All-Ireland in 2017 beating Waterford 0-26 to 2-17, he also led Galway to a National League title and Leinster title in 2017, beating Tipperary in the league and Wexford in a Leinster. So the next coach was always going to be a high profile name.
Jeffrey Lynskey and Eamon O’Shea were the initial favourites with Davy Fitzgerald priced at 33/1, but in the last 24hrs Fitzgerald is into 2/1. The gamble will come as quite a shock to Galway fans, who have had a love-hate relationship with the current Wexford manager since he started playing with the Banner 30 years ago.
There has also been a move for Francis Forde who was a selector with Micheal Donoghue for their All- Ireland win in 2017. He has been backed from 12/1 to 5/2.
