Mayo captain Moran undergoes surgery

Mayo captain Andy Moran will miss the All-Ireland final after undergoing surgery to repair his torn cruciate knee ligament at the Santry Sports Clinic in Dublin.

Moran had to be stretched off during Mayo’s All-Ireland quarter final win over Down last month and the full-forward missed his county’s thrilling semi-final win over Dublin at the weekend.

The Ballaghaderreen man’s rehabilitation will start soon with the latter stages of the 2013 National Football League set as a marker for his comeback.

The 28-year old has endured a frustrating year with injuries having just made a return from a broken leg at the beginning of this season before being denied an All-Ireland final appearance.

Moran was replaced for the semi-final against Dublin by Enda Varley but he too had to be replaced following a clash which resulted in a blow to the nose for the Garrymore player.

Varley is however expected to be fit for the showpiece game against Donegal on the 23rd September at Croke Park as Mayo look to win Sam Maguire for the first time in 51 years.
