NUIG proved too strong for Sligo in their FBD League encounter at Ballyhaunis on Wednesday night. In a game played in terrible conditions, the students were always the better side and were deserving victors over their more illustrious opponents.
The inter-county side fielded a weakened team with a number of players making their debuts. They managed to hold their own in the opening minutes and were level at 0-1 each early on. However, NUIG stepped up the pace approaching the half hour mark and hit a crucial goal just before the interval. The students had wind advantage in the first period and managed to make it count. They went in for the break leading by 1-3 to 0-2.
With the elements to their backs after the restart Sligo started brightly and scored the opening two points of the half. At 0-4 to 1-3 they looked right back in the tie. However, that was as close as the favourites could manage and they failed to find the target for the remainder of the game. For their part, NUIG added on two further points and eventually ran out five point winners, on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-4.
While it will have been a disappointing start to the year for the Sligo men, it is still very early in the day and they can be expected to improve as the league progresses. Full marks must go to NUIG who handled the conditions the better and were well worth their easy victory.
