Tyrone proved far too strong for fellow Ulster side Derry, in the second round of the Allianz National Football League in Healy Park, on Sunday afternoon. The home team have made an impressive start to the campaign and look a force to be reckoned with in this division.
Derry started the game brightly and had early scores from Mark Lynch and Charlie Kielt but the Red Hands soon took control of the tie and with Martin Penrose in excellent form they soon went ahead. Derry could only manage one more point in the opening half, as Tyrone began to dominate all over the field. Mickey Murphy scored a crucial goal on 26 minutes and the game was as good as over at that stage. Tyrone led 1-07 to 0-3 at the break.
Things went from bad to worse for Derry after the restart, with Patsy Bradley seeing red for a second bookable offence and Peter Harte firing Tyrone further in front with a well taken penalty. Derry already look in serious trouble in this division and will need to pick up points quickly if they are to avoid relegation.
For their part, Tyrone now look hot favourites to win the division and return to the top level next season. The Red Hands have looked very good in both the McKenna Cup and early rounds of the league competition. It will take a very smart outfit to stop the team from going unbeaten in the latter event.
