The PGA Tour lands in Sawgrass this week for what many players consider to be the fifth major. All the big guns with the exception of Bubba Watson will be playing this week and with such a quality field, the bookmakers have to be a bit more generous with their prices and most, if not all, will pay 6 places.
Last years winner, KJ Choi, is available at 100/1, and even at these odds he surely cannot be back given his current form. McIlroy tops the market, available at a top price at 11/1. He should be there or thereabouts, but his course form here is not great and there is probably better value to be found elsewhere.
Topping my list of picks this week is Sergio Garcia at 40/1. Garcia is a former winner here and can add a host of top ten and top 20 places to this record. His price is too big for me, especially coming off the back of an impressive display at the Masters, where he finished 12th. It’s all about the iron play at Sawgrass, and there is none better in the world than Garcia.
Next up I’ll take another with a good record here, Lee Westwood at 14/1. Westwood has 3 top tens here and is also a man bang in form. Two consecutive top 5 finishes, including one at the Masters. Westwood would be my number one pick were Garcia’s odds not so high.
Lastly I’ll have a go at Adam Scott for pretty much the same reason as Garcia. It’s all about iron play here and Scott has been up there with the best of them for most of his career. He is 35/1 and, you can be sure of plenty of excitement following him. Lets just hope it’s the good type.
