Shamrock Bowl: Preview of UL Vikings v Belfast Trojans

The highlight of this year’s Irish American football season takes place in Tallaght Stadium with the final of the Shamrock Bowl with last year’s beaten finalists UL Vikings coming up against the Belfast Trojans.

Both teams have gone through their regular season undefeated which sets up the ultimate show down. The Vikings lost last year’s shamrock bowl final to the Dublin Rebels in a tight final which saw the rebels win by a single point 16-15.

The Vikings have been in unstoppable form this season conceding on average 4 points per game. Sports News Ireland spoke to Vikings Defensive Lineman Ian Cahill about their chances and how their season has gone so far. “the season has being going very well this year we are undefeated going into the Shamrock Bowl and are happy with our progress so far, we had a comfortable win in the semi final against the Carrigfergus Knights 66-3 so we are looking forward to taking on the Trojans in the final”

The Vikings recently played a visiting division 3 Collage team from the US and although they were on the wrong side of a heavy defeat Ian believes that what they learned from this will give them a boost for the final. “we played Wisconsin Eau Claire University while they were touring recently and we learned so much from them, those guys trained up to 10 times a week and although we lost heavily we picked up an awful lot from them that will help us in the future”

The Vikings will be looking to Quarter back Marc Ashworth, Wide Receiver Sean Goldrick, Safety Liam Ryan, Defensive Lineman Ian Cahill and Nickel Linebacker Craig Switzer who has previously played professionally in Europe with clubs in Spain and London.

The Trojans beat last year’s winners The Dublin Rebels in the Semi-Finals 67-36 in the final so the Vikings defence will have to be in top form to stop the Trojans from piling on the points. It has all the hallmarks to be an exhilarating final for one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

The Shamrock Bowl takes place in Tallaght Stadium Dublin on the Saturday the 14th of July withkick off at 4pm.
