Westmeath underage star John Heslin has agreed a two-year AFL deal with new Melbourne club, Gold Coast Suns.
Heslin played on the Under-21 Westmeath team reached the Leinster final in 2010 and also featured for UCD in this year’s Sigerson Cup. He again lined out for the Westmeath Under-21’s in 2011 and hopes to play on the senior team later this season before embarking on his Australian adventure later in the Autumn.
Speaking to The Westmeath Independent, Heslin said:
“I’m hoping to get a run in the championship with the seniors this year just to make sure I’m not missing out on anything. It was a great experience to go out there and learn the different aspects to a professional game, I mean I try to be as professional as I can by myself here anyway, watching what I eat and how I train.
“I am obviously going to miss my friends and playing with the people I have grown up with, but I have to take the chance while it’s there. These opportunities don’t come along too often, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do”.
