Seattle Mariners power hitter Greg Halman has died following a stabbing in Rotterdam with the baseball’s star’s brother arrested in connection with the incident.
The 24 year old was murdered in the early hours of Monday morning, with police confirming that his brother is in custody.
The Dutch star, helped Netherlands win the 2007 European Baseball Championship, was signed as a free agent by Seattle in 2004 and after a long spell in the minor leagues he was called up to the Major League team last year.
A spokes person for the Rotterdam police said “A 24-year-old died this morning in a stabbing and we have arrested the 22-year-old brother of the victim
A statement released by the Mariners by chairman Howard Lincoln, President Chuck Armstrong and General Manager Jack Zduriencik said “Greg was a part of our organization since he was 16, and we saw him grow into a passionate young man and talented baseball player,”
“He had an infectious smile that would greet you in the clubhouse, and he was a tremendous teammate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg’s family.”
