Nicholls: Big Buck’s should be better than ever this year

Despite been unbeaten in 12 races Paul Nicholls feels that Big Buck’s should be ‘at his very best this season’.

Speaking on the eve of the triple World Hurdler’s seasonal reappearance in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury this weekend, Nicholls has a warning for all would-be challengers to Big Buck’s saying “I don’t know who else is going to take him on except for Five Dreams, which I also put in the race and will run,” said Nicholls at a special Hennessy Gold Cup preview evening in London.

Nicholls, who produced Kauto Star to land the Betfair Chase last weekend, feels that Big Bucks should improve for his first start of the season. “I haven’t trained him that hard and he’s nowhere near ready yet for the spring but he did a great bit of work with Kauto Star at Exeter the other day.”

The champion trainer also outlined his plans for the Hennessy runner that include Aiteen Thirtythree, Michel Le Bon and Neptune Collonges. “We’re going to find out how good Michel Le Bon and Great Endeavour are on Saturday.

“I was very impressed with David Johnson’s Great Endeavour in the Paddy Power. We’ll see what happens and may the best horse win.”
