Armagh 1-11 Monaghan 0-13
Armagh picked up their first points of the campaign in Division One when beating Galway at the Athletic Grounds yesterday.
Andy Mallon proved the hero hitting the winner in stoppage time to deny a Monaghan a second win of the season.
The home side looked in trouble until sub Brian Mallon scored the only goal of the game six minutes from the end.
Paul Finlay hit two frees to open the scoring but they were cancelled out by Steven McDonnell’s early point from a placed ball, and the sides were level at the end of the opening quarter after Rory Grugan and Conor McManus had swapped points.
It took until the 26th minute before McManus scored the game’s first point from play. Grugan followed up with an Armagh score from play, but the home side were fortunate when McManus sent Christopher McGuinness through on goal, but the corner forward sent his low shot just wide.
McDonnell added further points to send Armagh in at the interval with a 0-6 to 0-5 lead.
Monaghan had the strong wind behind them after the restart, and took the lead with points from Mark Downey and McManus. Finlay added a couple of long-range frees, and McManus also chipped in, but Armagh hit some excellent points on the break, with McDonnell, Grugan and Micheal O’Rourke all scoring.
The former brought the sides level for the eighth time before Finlay and McManus opened up a two points lead with seven minutes to play.
However, substitute Brian Mallon hit the crucial goal after the Monaghan defence had failed to clear McDonnell’s high ball. Monaghan looked to have gained a deserved draw through McManus late on, but deep into stoppage time, Andy Mallon raced onto Gareth Swift’s pass and hit the winning score.
