West Sussex-based Irishman David Simpson reclaimed the Science Supplements BHS Queen Elizabeth II Cup at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead on Saturday.
The Irish rider and Gentleman VH Veldof were the first combination to go clear in the competition, meaning Simpson was first to go against the clock in the second round.
They set a target time of 41.05 seconds, which each of their rivals failed to better while producing a clear round.
Helen Tredwell with Larksong took second, with Will Fletcher taking third place on Persimmon. Mark Edwards went quicker than Simpson, but a fence down, meant he dropped back to fourth place.
Winning rider, Simpson, who has only had the ride on Gentleman VH Veldof for a few weeks, said:
“He landed on the Monday before the Al Shira’aa Derby show in June, so that was our first show with him. I really, really like him. For such a short period together, we seem to have clicked quite well.”
David Simpson, formerly a stable jockey for Shane Breen, previously won the Science Supplements BHS Queen Elizabeth II Cup in 2016 on Chessy 17.
