Waterford hurling manager, Davy Fitzgerald has said that he believes there should be twelve teams in the top tier of the Allianz National League.
As there the same counties are basically promoted and relegated each season, the Deise boss feels that it is now time to have allthe top sides in Division One and the lower level counties in a more competitive second tier:
“I do think there should be a bigger Division One. I think they should be definitely looking at it. They could definitely be looking at ten or twelve without a shadow of doubt, and have two different groups or whatever. Or have one group and go flat-out for eight or nine weeks, ten weeks, and have a semi-final and final. I think it would be a great league.
“What we’re doing is isolating a few teams in Division Two and their standards might drop, whereas the rest are coming more even with each other. I think we should be trying to even up as many as we possibly can. If you’re in the Liam McCarthy, why shouldn’t you be able to compete in Division One? I think Laois have made savage progress over the last few years, Carlow have come on as well, Antrim as well. They need to be playing good games the whole time.”
