Michigan State and Michigan will square off in a Big Ten rivalry game in Ann Arbor on Saturday night. It is the first night game in the history of this long standing rivalry that Michigan leads 69-35-5 all time. Michigan State has had recent success winning 7 of the last 9 games.
Michigan State has rebounded nicely from their dreadful 3-9 performance in 2016. They stand 3-1 on the year and won their first Big Ten game last week against Iowa. The offense is powered by quarterback Brian Lewerke who leads the team in both passing and rushing yards and has 10 touchdowns on the year. The defense has been outstanding and is 5th in the nation allowing just 248 yards per game.
Michigan is 4-0 this season and has been even more impressive than MSU as their defense ranks #1 in yards allowed at 203 per game and #8 in points at 13.5 per game. The Michigan offense took a hit last week when they lost quarterback Wilton Speight to an undisclosed injury. Senior John O’Korn filled in nicely and will make the start this week.
Prediction and Betting Advice:
This will be the first away game for the Spartans as they visit the “Big House”. Tensions will be high for this in-state rivalry and I think MSU may struggle with the pressure. In their loss to Notre Dame, Michigan State was plagued by 3 first half turnovers. The Michigan defense will look for similar results and attempt to control the game running the ball on offense. I think Michigan wins big with a stifling defense. I loved the line at -9 when it opened, but I still think my pick is Michigan, even at -10.5.
