Hurricane Fly proved once and for all that he is the best 2 mile hurdler in training, with an effortless victory in the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown on Friday.
The Willie Mullin’s trained gelding was always travelling well, stalking long time leader, Binocular, and when Ruby Walsh asked him to win his race he quickened up on the bridle. It was a hugely impressive success and left bookmakers quoting prices as short as 6/4 for next years Champion Hurdle.
Mullins confirmed that the Cheltenham race was ultimate target again next season, before which Hurricane Fly will have a well-earned break following a season that has yielded five Grade 1 victories.
“We’ll take him home now and give him the summer and bring him back for next season, when he’ll have a similar campaign, geared towards Cheltenham and coming back here,” Mullins said.
Rider Ruby Walsh said: “He has come back well today and beaten horses like Thousand Stars and Binocular – they are high-class hurdlers.
“It was a messy enough race early on. I was of the opinion, as I said to Willie beforehand, that if they walked, I was going to stand it as this chap isn’t going to walk. He is a fast horse as well as a horse that stays. He jumped super and showed just how much class he has today.
“I was in front long enough but that’s the way it worked out. He’s an incredible little horse.
“Who knows what next year will bring but you wouldn’t be getting off him.”
