Ireland 0 Germany 5
Ireland’s dreams of reaching the semi-finals of the European Hockey Championship ended on Tuesday with a 5-0 loss to the hands of Germany in Antwerp.
Ireland coached by Alexander Cox had a chance of making the last four with a win here despite losing 5-1 to Holland and drawing 3-3 with Scotland in their previous pool games. However, they fell behind and the Germans powered through with a deserving 5-0 win. It was 2-0 at the break before Ireland conceded three goals then in the final stages.
Ireland made a good start with Darragh Walsh winning a penalty corner in the second minute. However, German goalkeeper Victor Aly was on hand to save the penalty corner effort from Shane O’Donoghue. Germany had much better luck from penalty corners, they indeed scored two of them themselves, both coming in the first quarter. Wellen and Grambusch getting on the scorecard. Kirk Shimmin’s and Eugene Magee both had chances for Ireland, Mark Ingram was on hand to stop at the other end denying the Germans another goal from a penalty corner. Germany led at the break 2-0.
Ireland had a couple of chances in the third quarter, while Jamie Carr made a couple of good saves. Sean Murray found Magee who hit narrowly wide. In the final quarter, the German defence stood firm. They conceded two penalty corners though neither which were converted by Ireland. Germany upped the ante and they would go on to score three goals in the final five minutes. The last goal came from a penalty corner. Ireland now go into a relegation pool with both Scotland and England. They will play either Wales or Spain in their first game, the bottom two teams in each pool will be relegated to Euro Hockey level 2.
Meanwhile, the Ireland women’s hockey team will play on Wednesday having won one and lost one. A win over Germany will guarantee them a place in the last four.
