Irish show jumping team manager Robert Splaine has named his squad for the German Nations Cup in Mannaheim this coming weekend.
The event will serve as a warm up to next month’s European Showing Jumping Championships.
Aachen will be hosting the 2015 European Show Jumping Championships in August and normally hosts the German Nations Cup but Mannaheim relieved them of their duties this year with the European Championships to be held in the North-Western German city.
Splaine will select a team of four from Kevin Babington and Shorapur, Shane Breen and Golden Hawk, Cameron Hanley with Antello Z, Conor Swail and Grand Cru vd Vijf Eiken and Shane Sweetnam and Chaqui Z.
Babington goes into this weekend on a high after his recent victory at the Grand Prix at the Split Rock Jumping Tour in Lexington Kentucky. He will once again ride his horse Shorapur.
Shane Breen will hope add another Nations Cup to the ones he won in 2006, 2011 and 2012 after some impressive clear rounds with the 2006 and 2011 successes coming at home in Dublin. Cameron Hanley will hope to produces a good all round performance after his recent return to his old horse Antello Z.
Conor Swail and Shane Sweetnam complete the Irish team who will be aiming to go a couple places better than in 2013 when they finished third.
Splaine said the team he has picked have good experience under their belt from this season already.
“The German Nations Cup is always a major test for both horse and rider, and in the squad we have three combinations who this year have competed exclusively on the North American circuit.”
He also added that the Nations Cup event will act important preparation for the FEI European competition between the 11th and 23rd of August.
“Similar to last year I chose to compete at the German Nations’ Cup, as with the European Championship selections imminent it works very well with our overall plan.”
The German Nations Cup will celebrate its centenary this year in Mannheim and takes place over the course of the weekend.
