James McCartan has decided to remain on as manager of the Down senior football team for another year.
However, he will have a new backroom as both Brian McIver and Paddy Tally have been replaced.
The pair had been selectors under McCartan for the last two years but won’t be involved next year,as Jerome Johnston and Aidan O’Rourke take their places.
The Down County Board confirmed the news and also denied reports that McIver and Tally were forced out by the players.
“Coiste Chontae An Duin wish to place on record their sincere thanks to Brian McIver and Paddy Tally for the work over the past two years that they undertook with the Down Senior Football Panel,” a statement read.
“Down Football is in a much better position thanks to the good work of Brian and Paddy. We wish them well in the future and assure them that their work with the Down Senior Football Team in 2010 and 2011 is much appreciated by all in Down.
“We would like to formally place on record a correction to a newspaper report which had previously stated that a Players meeting had taken place leading to a change in the Management. We categorically state that no such meeting took place subsequent to our defeat by Cork in the All Ireland Qualifiers.
“For 2012 Coiste Chontae An Duin are delighted to be able to announce that James McCartan will remain as our County Senior Team Manager and will be joined in the management of the team by Jerome Johnston and Aidan O’Rourke. The management team have also acquired the services of Amy Davis as strength and conditioning coach.
“On behalf of all the Gaels in Down we wish James and his team well in 2012 and look forward to January and the commencement of a new season.”
