Katie Taylor knocked out of Olympics after shock split decision result

Katie Taylor has been beaten in her first fight at the Rio Olympics. The London Gold Medallist came into the fight on the back of two losses.

Taylor’s opponent was 35 year old Mira Potkonen who was given no chance by bookmakers as she was the 12/1 outsider for the fight.

Taylor in her previous bouts with Potkonen, never lost, but the Bray woman’s invincibility had diminished since her loss to Estelle Mossley of France in AIBA World Boxing Championship’s in Kazakhstan. With Pete Taylor, father of Katie absent from her corner Katie made a very tentative start in an almost empty arena, having received a bye to the last 16 encounter.

Taylor took the first round with two judges going in her favour, 10-9, 10-9, 9-10. Taylor possessed the best footwork in the opening round, while her opponent possessed the greater work rate. Taylor landed a nice combination to see her win the round.

However, her impressive Finnish opponent fought back in round two and all three judges went against Katie Taylor, Potkonen took the round 10-9, 10-9, and 10-9. Taylor did manage to put in an excellent final round but still trailed on two judges’ scorecards.  She connected with a shuddering right rook and managed to breach her opponent with a straight right, but the Finn maintained her composure as Taylor finished the round tentatively as the judges awarded the underdog the bout on a split decision.

Many people think Katie did enough including her coach Zaur Anita who was livid after the fight. he told RTE after the result was shocking and Katie had won the 1st, 3rd and 4th round.

Please give us your thoughts if you thin Katie did enough to win.
