Kildare boss Kieran McGeeney has been rocked by the news that star defender Peter Kelly looks set to miss the entire 2011 campaign due to a cruciate knee injury.
The injury is becoming a curse in Kildare football, with Dermot Early, Mikey Conway, Ken Donnelly, and Rob Kelly all affected by the same complaint last season.
Two Mile House clubman, Kelly, suffered the injury after just 30 seconds of UCD’S O’Byrne Cup clash with Meath. Kelly was the captain of the students on the night. Initially it had been feared that Kelly had suffered cartilage damage but scans on Wednesday revealed that the player had in fact torn the cruciate.
The defender will have further tests over the coming days to determine the exact nature of the injury but it now seems likely that he will miss most, if not all, of the 2011 season.
“He’s torn the cruciate” confirmed selector Niall Carew yesterday. “We just have to wait and see how bad it is now when he has the scope”.
