Laois 1-12 Antrim 0-10
Laois footballers maintained their perfect record in Allianz NFL Division 2 by beating Antrim in Portlaoise on Sunday.
Darren Strong, Gary Kavanagh and MJ Tierney hit late scores to ensure Justin McNulty’s side picked up their second win of the new campaign.
The latter’s fisted effort helped his side establish a 1-07 to 0-05 lead at half-time, but they had Brendan Quigley sent-off just after the resumption.
Paddy Cunningham led the Antrim fightback as they reduced the margin to a point, but McNulty’s men produced the stronger finish.
Laois managed to hold out for the win despite failing to score for 27 minutes in the second half.
The teams were evenly matched in the opening minutes at O’Moore Park and were level on four occasions inside the opening 25 minutes.
Laois had wind advantage and made it tell in the closing stages of the half outscoring Antrim by 1-02 to 0-01. Tierney was perfectly positioned on the edge of the square to fist a high ball to the net. A late point from Conor Murray closed the gap to five points.
Antrim scored four unanswered points during the third quarter to bridge the gap lead to 1-07 to 0-09. However they also hit four wides during this purple patch, and it came back to haunt them when substitute Paul Cahillane pointed to increase the home side’s lead.
Antrim were then outscored by four points to one in final minutes as Strong, Cahillane, Kavanagh and Tierney made certain of the win.
