McIlroy Secures FedEx Cup Win

Rory McIlroy emerged victorious from a three-way playoff to secure the FedEx Cup title as well as an 11.5 million dollar jackpot.

The prize money was split into two installments, with McIlroy awarded 10 million dollars for beating Dustin Johnson (who finished 6th last night) to the FedEx cup, as well as 1.5 million dollars for his eventual playoff success and 1st place prize at East Lake.

After beginning the day two shots down, a stunning final round of 64, including a 5-under back 9, left the Northern Irishman level with Americans Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell on 12 under.

Chappell couldn’t hold his nerve come playoff time, falling after his competitors both shot par on the opening hole. From here on in it was an absolute nail-biter, with nothing to separate Moore and McIlroy through the second and third.

The fourth hole saw McIlroy play a breathtaking approach shot to within 14-feet, and after Moore slotted home his par putt, the Northern Irishman was left with a birdie putt for FedEx Cup glory. A putt which he duly holed, leading to screams of adulation and pure relief, as well as chants of ‘Rory, Rory’ from the crowd.

After regularly having his temperament called into question of late, world number three McIlroy last night proved that when he in on song, there are few, if any, to match him. At East Lake, Atlanta, we saw the real Rory McIlroy stand up and be counted. And what a privilege that was…

Congratulations Rory!
