Olympics – USA retain basketball crown

A ruthless United Stated powered past Serbia in a 96-66 win in the gold medal match in the Olympic basketball competition to give USA a third straight gold medal and to give coach Mike Krzyzewski a golden send off.

USA scraped to a three point win the group stages of the competition, but they showed no mercy as they surged to 52-29 half time lead which gave them the initiative to go on in the second half and claim a 25th straight win on the Olympic hardwood.

Kevin Durant was outstanding contributing 30 points, including 24 in the opening half. DeMarcus Collins was also impressive as he pulled down 15 rebounds. The game capped a brilliant tenure as Team USA coach for Krzyzewski who signs off having guided the USA to three consecutive gold medals in the Olympics and a near perfect record of 88 wins and 1 loss. The only loss in an impeccable record coming in 2006 in a defeat to Greece in the World Championships.

In the bronze medal match Spain took on Australia. Spain edged the game by a single point defeating the Aussies 89-88.
