Phelps wins 22nd Olympic medal

Michael Phelps stormed to his 22nd gold medal and his fourth consecutive 200 metres individual medley in Rio late Thursday night.

The 31 year old American claimed the medal with a winning time of 54.66 seconds,to win his second individual medal at the games and is fourth overall.

Japanese athlete Kosuke Hagino, the 400 metre individual medley champion was second, recording a time of 1 minute 56.61 seconds.Wang Shun of China claimed the bronze medal with a time of 1 minute 57.05 seconds.

Ryan Lochte, a team mate of Phelps could only manage fifth with a time of 1 minute 57.47 seconds. Britain’s Dan Wallace was eight with a time of 1 minute 58.54 seconds.

Phelps’s medal haul may not be over though as he a chance of winning another gold medal in the 100 metre butterfly. Phelps has won the gold medal at this events for the last 3 Olympics in 2004,2008 and 2012 and will be going for his fourth consecutive win.
