Sportnewsireland’s antepost selection, Razldazl George won the Ladbrokes Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night.
The Dolores Ruth trained dog had been favourite for the competition since the early rounds, but drifted out to a price of 5-2 as he failed to win either his quarter final or semi final heats.
However, George delivered on the night that mattered and picked up late to claim the biggest prize in the sport. Drawn in trap four, the dog was typically slow from the gates but stayed on stoutly and edged out Dream Walker.
Krug 95 finished back in third place to complete the frame. A huge crowd attended last night’s final and they got a great showpiece with the winner leaving it until the death to secure the honours.
The race turned out exactly as we predicted back on 3rd July, telling readers that George would mow the field down late:
“Dolores Ruth, trainer of joint favourite Razldazl Jayfkay has another strong contender in the shape of Razldazl George. The latter is a thorough stayer and Shelbourne Park should suit him much better than the tight bends of Wimbledon. He may just have the edge on his stable companion in this competition and represents fair value at a best priced 16/1. He will certainly be staying on when others have cried enough”.
