Legendary Irish commentator,Micheal O’Muircheartaigh was formally introduced to his new prized possession Razldazl Rioga at Shelbourne Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kerry native was presented with the classically bred greyhound by the Irish Greyhound Board as recognition of his huge contribution to greyhound racing and sport in general over many, many years.
Micheal called on his long time friend and trainer Dolores Ruth to help find a suitable dog and she came up with a highly regarded puppy which she bred herself in her Rathangan kennels. He is by world renowned sire Brett Lee from the star brood Razldazl Pearl, which is owned in partnership by Dolores and Liam Marks.
In previous litters Razldazl Pearl has produced a number of star trackers, including Town View Foods Champion Stakes winner Makeshift and a number of top greyhounds carrying the Razldazl prefix, including Jayfkay, George, Joe, Alice, Liza, Jewel and William. Indeed, Rioga’s litter comrades Monleek Chloe and Monleek Sloopy have a combined record of three wins from three outings.
Dolores Ruth, who has trained an English Derby winner Shanless Slippy and Irish Derby winner Razldazl Billy, has very high hopes for Razldazl Rioga. She said: “He is shaping very nicely. He has done a few very fast times on the schooling track and around Newbridge where he clocked 17.50 for the sprint on a slow track. He looks very promising and will be ready to race in about three or four weeks”.
Micheal has enjoyed considerable success in the past with dogs such as Unique Reward, Stagalee, Radio Sport and Bone Lazy but is obviously hoping that Rioga, which is Irish for “Kingly”, turns out to be something special.
He said: “It’s going to be fun cheering on a dog of my own again. All the family are looking forward to it and we couldn’t have a better trainer in our corner than Dolores Ruth. She is a champion trainer and, who knows, perhaps Rioga will prove to be a King on the track”.
