Irish 50km walker Rob Heffernan finished a brave 6th place in the Rio 2016 Olympics 50km Walk Race just over two minutes outside a medal. (3hr 53 57sec)
The Cork runner Heffernan was in a chasing group of 10 for the first 30km but then he began to drop off the pace and was never able to attach himself back. Yohann Diniz collapsed to the floor around the 36km mark when he was leading by over 2 minutes, but the brave French walker got back up and amazingly finished 7th.
The other Irish runner Brendan Boyce finished 19th and Alex Wright dropped out of the race around the 35km marker.
Matej Toth who became the first every track and field gold medal from Slovenia with Jared Tallent of Australia in second with Hikoori Aria 30seconds back in third place.
